Dear Missourians,
Lutherans For Life of Missouri wants you to be aware and alerted of an amendment that will be on the ballot this coming November. It will be labeled as "Amendment 3". If passed it will become a part of the Missouri Constitution. Once there it will be quite difficult to repeal. This amendment is the result of an initiative petition that gained enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.
The problem with this amendment is that it reinstates abortion in Missouri. It guarantees this "right" to kill babies up to the time of "viability", a term which is undefined in the amendment. It is open to opinion but generally considered to be 24 weeks into pregnancy. Abortions would be allowed up until that time. This wipes out all of Missouri's current protection of life in the womb before "viability."
What about after this point in the baby's life? The usual phraseology is used: Missouri's amendment also includes exceptions after viability "to protect the life or physical or mental health of the pregnant person." These terms are very generic and again open to opinion. This has, in the past, opened the door to abortion up to birth. It is expected that is what will actually happen.
We must do two things now: pray that eyes will be opened to the amendment and what it will bring to Missouri, and spread the word to defeat this amendment.
If you have any questions please email them to [email protected].
